CURLING: USA men move into first place at 2008 World Seniors
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE March 12, 2008 USA men move into first place at 2008 World Senior Championships (STEVENS POINT, Wis.) - David Russell's Team USA handed the home team its first loss and moved into a tie for first place Wednesday night at the 2008 World Senior Championships in Vierumaki, Finland. Russell (La Crosse, Wis.) and teammates Bill Rhyme (Green Bay, Wis.), Mark Swandby (Madison, Wis.), Dave Carlson (Portage, Wis.) and Mike Fraboni (McFarland, Wis.) defeated the Finnish team led by Mauno Nummila, 7-5, to improve to 6-1 with one game remaining in the round robin. The top two teams from each men's pool advance to the semifinals on Saturday. Canada leads the other pool with a perfect 6-0 record. In tonight's game the U.S. took the lead in the fifth end with a big four-ender but the Finns tied the game in the seventh end with a deuce. The U.S. had the last rock advantage in the final end though and sealed the victory with a deuce of its own. The U.S. men will finish the round robin Thursday night against Ireland (5-2). The USA women's team of Pam Oleinik (Brookfield, Wis.), Laurie Rahn (Lake Forest, Ill.), Susan Curtis (Rogers, Ark.) and Jo Ann Matthews (New Berlin, Wis.) allowed Scotland's Kirsty Letton rink to steal too many points on them en route to a 13-2 loss. Since the World Senior Championships were created in 2002, the U.S. men have won four silver medals (2006, 2005, 2004, 2003) and one gold medal (2002) while the women have won three bronze (2007, 2004, 2002).
