CURLING: USA men improve to 3-1 at World Seniors
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE March 10, 2008 USA men improve to 3-1 at 2008 World Senior Championships (STEVENS POINT, Wis.) - The USA men improved to 3-1 with a 6-2 win over Italy Monday morning while the American ladies posted their first win at the 2008 World Senior Championships in Vierumaki, Finland. David Russell (La Crosse, Wis.) and teammates Bill Rhyme (Green Bay, Wis.), Mark Swandby (Madison, Wis.), Dave Carlson (Portage, Wis.) and Mike Fraboni (McFarland, Wis.) gave up a steal of one in the opening end but never trailed again as they put up a deuce in the second end and only allowed Italy's Gino Savoi team to score one point in the third end. The Americans kept the Italians off the scoreboard after that as they scored four unanswered points to close out the game in six ends. With the win, the USA men improve to 3-1 and in fourth place in their pool. They return to the ice tomorrow at 2:40 p.m. (local time) to play Iceland (1-2). The top two teams in each pool advance to the semifinals on Saturday. Canada leads the other pool with a 4-0 record. The USA women's team of Pam Oleinik (Brookfield, Wis.), Laurie Rahn (Lake Forest, Ill.), Susan Curtis (Rogers, Ark.) and Jo Ann Matthews (New Berlin, Wis.) came from behind to knock off England's Glynnice Lauder rink, 9-6, in an extra end to post their first win. The American ladies fell behind much like the earlier two games but persevered today against England. Trailing 5-2 at the halfway mark, the U.S. scored one in the fifth end and stole the next two ends to take a 6-5 leading heading into the final end of regulation. The English ladies only scored one point and the game went into an extra end with the Americans clinching the win with three points. The U.S. ladies return to the ice at 8 a.m. Tuesday (local time) against New Zealand (0-3). Live scoring can be found at http://curling.fi/en/competitions/leagues/2687. Since the World Senior Championships were created in 2002, the U.S. men have won four silver medals (2006, 2005, 2004, 2003) and one gold medal (2002) while the women have won three bronze (2007, 2004, 2002).
