CURLING: Senior men grab second win at 2008 World Seniors
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE March 9, 2008 USA men get second win at 2008 World Seniors (STEVENS POINT, Wis.) - David Russell's Team USA won its second match at the 2008 World Senior Championships today in Vierumaki, Finland. Russell (La Crosse, Wis.) and teammates Bill Rhyme (Green Bay, Wis.), Mark Swandby (Madison, Wis.), David Carlson (Portage, Wis.) and Mike Fraboni (McFarland, Wis.) bounced back from a loss earlier today to Scotland, 7-3, to defeat New Zealand's Peter Becker rink, 4-3. With the win, the U.S. men are in fourth place in their pool. The Americans played a defensive game against the Kiwis with the game tied at 2-2 heading into the seventh end. The U.S. scored a deuce in that end which proved to be the saving grace for the Americans. Becker's New Zealand rink would only score one point in the final end. In the team's loss this morning, the U.S. trailed early and couldn't overcome Scotland's Adam Graeme rink. After falling behind 3-0, the Americans scored a deuce but would give up three more points over the next two ends. The teams exchanged singles over the next to ends as Scotland improved to 2-0. The American ladies, led by Pamela Oleinik (Brookfield, Wis.), fell to 0-2 after losing to Finland's Helena Timonen team, 11-4. Oleinik and teammates Laurie Rahn (Lake Forest, Ill.), Susan Curtis (Rogers, Ark.), Jo Ann Matthews (New Berlin, Wis.) and Donna Purkey (Greenwich, Conn.) allowed the Finns to score the game's first nine points over four ends before putting up a four-ender in the fifth. Another deuce in the sixth end was enough for the U.S. ladies to call it quits for the day. Live scoring can be found at http://www.curling.fi/en/competitions/leagues/2687/results.
