March 08, 2008, 1 a.m. (ET)
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE March 8, 2008 USA men to play for gold at 2008 World Juniors (OSTERSUND, Sweden) - The USA men will make their first appearance in the gold medal game since 1984 after defeating Canada, 8-6, in Saturday night's semifinal at the 2008 World Junior Championships. In fact, the only two times the U.S. has been in the gold-medal game, they've won - in 1984 with Al Edwards at the helm and in 1979 led by Don Barcome Jr. Chris Plys (Duluth, Minn.) and teammates Aanders Brorson (Duluth, Minn.), Matt Perushek (Eveleth, Minn.), Matt Hamilton (McFarland, Wis.) and Daniel Plys (Duluth, Minn.) take their 9-2 record into tomorrow's gold-medal game to take on the home country - Sweden's Oskar Erikkson team at 2:30 p.m. local time (7:30 a.m. CT). Team USA got revenge on Canada's William Dion rink for an earlier loss this week during the round robin. This breaks Canada's impressive dominance in the junior men's field at this event. Canada has won nine of the last 10 championships and three straight until running into the U.S. team. The Americans won today in a characteristic fashion - coming from behind. The U.S. took an early lead after stealing one in the third end to go ahead 3-1 but the Canadian team scored a deuce in the fifth and came back from the halftime break with a steal of two to take a 5-3 lead. The U.S. would regain the lead with three points in the seventh end. After the teams exchanged singles, the U.S. ended up stealing the final end for the 8-6 victory. Canada will now try to re-group to take on Norway in the bronze-medal game at 2 p.m. tomorrow. Scotland's Eve Muirhead rink advanced to the gold-medal game after defeating Russia's Ludmila Privivkova team, 7-6. Scotland will play Sweden's Cicilia Ostlund in the 9:30 a.m. match-up. Canada and Russia will meet in the bronze medal game at 9 a.m. Live action from the World Junior Championships will be webstreamed at www.eurosport.se or at www.curlingkanalen.se.
