CURLING: USA men open with win at 2008 World Seniors

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE March 8, 2008 USA men open with win at 2008 World Seniors (STEVENS POINT, Wis.) - The USA men opened with a 6-3 win over England as the 2008 World Senior Championships kicked off in Vierumaki, Finland. David Russell (La Crosse, Wis.) and teammates Bill Rhyme (Green Bay, Wis.), Mark Swandby (Madison, Wis.), David Carlson (Portage, Wis.) and Mike Fraboni (McFarland, Wis.) built an early lead and held off Michael Sutherland's English team to get off to a solid start in the round robin. Team USA scored three points in the second end and followed up with a steal of one to take a 4-0 lead. Sutherland's team only mustered a single in the fourth end and the U.S. blanked the fifth as they worked towards a deuce in the sixth end. After scoring two in the seventh, the Americans ran the Englishmen out of rocks in the eighth and final end. The American ladies, led by Pamela Oleinik (Brookfield, Wis.), didn't fare as well as they lost their opener, 7-2, to Canada's Diane Foster rink. Oleinik and teammates Laurie Rahn (Lake Forest, Ill.), Susan Curtis (Rogers, Ark.), Jo Ann Matthews (New Berlin, Wis.) and Donna Purkey (Greenwich, Conn.) fell behind as Canada built a 5-0 lead after three ends. The U.S. ladies got one point in the fourth and stole one more in the next end but the Canadian ladies would score two more points over the next two ends to seal the win.
