March 8, 2008 USA men advance to semifinal at 2008 World Juniors (OSTERSUND, Sweden) - The USA men led by Chris Plys (Duluth, Minn.) have advanced to the men's semifinal after defeating Norway, 7-3, Saturday morning at the 2008 World Junior Championships. Plys (Duluth, Minn.) and teammates Aanders Brorson (Duluth, Minn.), Matt Perushek (Eveleth, Minn.), Matt Hamilton (McFarland, Wis.) and Daniel Plys (Duluth, Minn.) will now face Canada's William Dion rink in tonight's 7 p.m. semifinal (noon CT). Dion's Canadian team fell to Sweden's Oskar Erikkson rink, 9-6, in the Page Playoff 1-2 game. Sweden advances to Sunday's championship final at 2:30 p.m. to face the winner of tonight's semifinal winner. Tonight's losing team will play for the bronze medal, also on Sunday with a 2 p.m. start. The American men got the better of Norway's Kristian Rolvsjord rink for the second time this week as they came alive in the second half to cruise to the team's first playoff victory. This is the third consecutive trip to the World Juniors for Plys, who finished fifth last year. The teams exchanged deuces in the first two ends with the U.S. taking the lead with a single in the fourth end. The next two ends were blanked as the Norwegians tried to set up a decent end but the U.S. would steal two in the seventh end to increase the lead to 5-2. Norway was forced to just one point in the eighth and the Americans sealed the victory with a pivotal deuce in the ninth end. In women's action, the Swedish ladies led by Cecilia Ostlund also advanced to the gold-medal game as they defeated Scotland's Eve Muirhead team, 8-2, in the Page Playoff 1-2 game. Russia's Ludmila Privivkova rink defeated Canada's Kaitlyn Lawes team, 7-5, to advance to tonight's semifinal game where they'll face Scotland. Sweden will meet the winner of the semifinal in tomorrow's championship final at 9:30 a.m. (local time) .
