CURLING: USA men to play in Page Playoff 3-4 game at 2008 World Juniors

March 07, 2008, 1 a.m. (ET)
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE March 7, 2008 USA men to play in Page 3-4 playoff game at 2008 World Juniors (STEVENS POINT, Wis.) - The USA men led by Chris Plys (Duluth, Minn.) finished the round robin in a three-way tie for first place with Canada and Sweden after defeating China, 10-6, this morning at the 2008 World Junior Championships in Ostersund, Sweden. The downside is that based on head-to-head losses in the round robin against both Canada and Sweden, the U.S. men are the No. 3 seed and fall to the Page Playoff 3-4 game. They'll face Norway's Kristian Rolvsfjord rink, which knocked off Switzerland in a tiebreaker game to earn the No. 4 seed. The top four teams advance to the Page Playoffs, whereby the first and second place teams meet in one game (winner to final, loser to semi-final) while the third and fourth place finishers meet in another game (winner to semi-final, loser to bronze medal game this year). In the round robin finale today, Plys and teammates Aanders Brorson (Duluth, Minn.), Matt Perushek (Eveleth, Minn.), Matt Hamilton (McFarland, Wis.) and Daniel Plys (Duluth, Minn.) fell behind against China's Jia Lian Zang rink but like many other games this week, the team battled back for the victory. After giving up a steal of one in the fourth end, the Americans were down 4-2 and answered with four points to grab the lead back for good. Deuces in the seventh and ninth ends became too much for China to overcome. On the women's side, Scotland and Sweden will meet in the Page 1-2 game while Russia meets Canada in the Page 3-4 game. Canada defeated Denmark this morning in a tiebreaker after the Danish skipped missed the house on her last toss and gave up a back-breaking three points and the win to Canada. The Page Playoffs take place at 2 p.m. Saturday followed by the semifinals at 7 p.m. The women's bronze medal will be contested at 9 a.m. Sunday followed by the women's gold-medal game at 9:30. The men's bronze game begins at 2 p.m. followed shortly thereafter by the men's gold game at 2:30 p.m. All games are seven hours ahead of CT.
