March 3, 2008 USA women post first win at 2008 World Juniors (STEVENS POINT, Wis.) - The USA women got their first mark in the win column Monday night with a 7-6 come-from-behind victory over Norway at the 2008 World Junior Championships in Ostersund, Sweden. USA's Nina Spatola (McFarland, Wis.), Becca Hamilton (McFarland, Wis.), Anna Plys (Duluth, Minn.), Jenna Haag (Milton, Wis.) and Karlie Koenig (Waukesha, Wis.) fell behind early again but this time they staged a late rally that resulted in the Americans improving to 1-3 in the round robin standings. Norway's Anneline Skarsmoen rink scored one point in the opening end and stole two points in the third before the Americans hung a deuce on the scoreboard in the fourth end. After Norway scored just one point in the fifth end, the USA ladies went on the attack grabbing a deuce and stealing two to take the team's first lead of the match. Norway tied the game in the ninth but the two-time U.S. junior national champion Spatola sealed the win with a single in the 10th end. Denmark's Madeleine Dupont rink suffered its first loss at the hands of Canada's Kaitlyn Lawes team, 8-7. The Danes are tied for first place at 3-1 with Scotland's Eve Muirhead and Sweden's Cecilia Ostlund rinks. Scotland defeated Japan, 8-4, while Sweden defeated the 2006 world junior champion, Ludmila Privivkova of Russia, 6-4. The Swiss ladies, skipped by Michele Jaggi, also posted their first win of the competition as they defeated Germany, 7-3. The U.S. women return to the ice with matches against Switzerland (1-3) and Russia (2-2) on Tuesday. The U.S. men, led by Chris Plys (Duluth, Minn.), are 2-1 and will play Canada (2-1) and Denmark (1-2) tomorrow. The round robin continues through Friday morning.
