Jan 16 CURLING: Minnesota state curling championships begin Thursday in Eveleth

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE January 16, 2008 Minnesota club playoffs begin Thursday in Eveleth (STEVENS POINT, Wis.) - Curl Mesabi, the site of the 2007 World Junior Curling Championships, will host the 2008 Minnesota State Curling Championships beginning Thursday in Eveleth, Minn. The winning teams will represent Minnesota at the 2008 U.S. Club National Championships in Mankato, Minn., March 1-8. The U.S. Club Nationals, now in its fourth year, does not lead to the World Championships, rather rewards the top men's and women's club/league teams in the U.S. One men's and one women's team will qualify for the upcoming Club Nationals from this event. On the women's side, defending Minnesota champion Norma O'Leary is searching for her first club national title after finishing as the runner-up the past three seasons. On the men's side, last year's Minnesota state runner-up Jon Medure competed at the 2007 Club Nationals, finishing sixth. The action gets underway at 7 p.m. Thursday at the eight-sheet curling club located at 901 Hat Trick Ave. in Eveleth.
