CURLING: 2008 World Junior Championships begin Sunday in Sweden
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE February 27, 2008 USA teams ready for World Junior Championships in Sweden (STEVENS POINT, Wis.) - Nina Spatola (McFarland, Wis.) and Chris Plys (Duluth, Minn.) will lead their teams at the 2008 World Junior Championships March 2-9 in Ostersund, Sweden. The Spatola and Plys teams won the 2008 USA Curling Junior National Championships earlier this month in Portage, Wis. Plys, 20, became the first U.S. skip at the junior level to win three titles in a row. Teaming up with Plys are Aanders Brorson (Duluth, Minn.) and Matthew Perushek (Eveleth, Minn.), who won the title with him last year and finished fifth at the 2007 World Juniors. New to the team this season is Matthew Hamilton (McFarland, Wis.). Daniel Plys, the younger brother of Chris Plys, is the team's alternate. The team is coached by Phill Drobnick (Duluth, Minn.). They'll play in round robin action against teams from Canada, Norway, Scotland, Sweden, Denmark, the Czech Republic, Switzerland, Germany and China. Spatola, 19, represented the U.S. at the World Juniors in 2006, finishing 10th in her first appearance. Joining her are Becca Hamilton (McFarland, Wis.), Anna Plys (Duluth, Minn.), Jenna Haag (Milton, Wis.) and Karlie Koenig (Waukesha, Wis.). The team is coached by Neil Doese (Menomonee, Wis.). They'll play in round robin action against Canada, Japan, Scotland, Sweden, Norway, Switzerland, Russia, Denmark and Germany. Scotland won the women's title last year while the Canadian men won a record 16th overall junior title and third in a row. The round robin takes place Sunday through Thursday with the Page System playoffs set to begin March 8 followed by the medal games on March 9.
