April 8, 2008 France sends USA to third straight loss at 2008 World Men's Championship (GRAND FORKS, N.D.) - USA's Craig Brown team stumbled to its third straight loss as
France's Thomas Dufour took down the Americans, 6-5, Tuesday afternoon at the 2008 World Men's Curling Championship. "Everyone is playing really well against us," said lead Pete Annis (Owatonna, Minn.). "We've never lost two games in a row this season until now." The U.S. now slides further down the standings with a 3-4 record while other teams are gaining momentum as the push for the playoff spots heats up. Hoping to change the momentum, the team opted to play alternate Kevin Kakela (Rolla, N.D.) in the second position in this afternoon's match. "We were hoping that Kevin could give us a boost, and he played a really nice game," Annis said. But, the North Dakota home boy didn't have any lucky charms in his pocket. The first points of the match didn't come until the third end when the Americans stole a single from the Frenchmen. However, it would be the only lead the U.S. would have in this game. Dufour made a takeout for two in the fourth end to take the lead. The American men challenged that a stone was burned in the sixth end but the French disagreed. The end concluded with Brown being heavy on his draw to give up a steal of two. "I think it frustrated Craig and was probably still on his mind," Annis said. Brown got those two points back with a takeout in the seventh end to cut the deficit to 4-3. Dufour countered with a draw for one but Brown tied the game in the ninth end with a draw of his own for two. The American men got a stone behind a center guard in the 10th end but it was hanging off the back of the four-foot giving Dufour the draw for the win. "We're just not making the right shots," Annis said. "We either put the broom in the right place and throw the wrong weight or have the broom wrong and throw the right weight. We're frustrated." The U.S. returns to the ice at 2 p.m. against Sweden (1-5). Live webstreaming of the 2008 World Men's Championship can be found at www.wcsn.com or www.curltv.com.
