Wescott Named Liaison to Deep Creek 2014

OCTOBER 17, 2012 -- USA Canoe/Kayak names Karla Westcott as its liaison to the 2014 ICF Canoe Slalom World Championships in Deep Creek, Maryland.

The volunteer position was created to facilitate communication between USA Canoe/Kayak and the Deep Creek 2014 host organizing committee.

Westcott brings with her strong relationships within the international slalom community gained while serving as competition manager for the 2012 ICF Junior/Under-23 Slalom World Championships in Wausau, Wis., July 11-15 and as section judge for whitewater slalom at the Athens 2004 Olympic Games.

The world’s best whitewater paddlers will descend upon Adventure Sports Center International (ASCI) on Deep Creek in McHenry, Md., September 16-21, 2014. Deep Creek was selected to host the event by the International Canoe Federation (ICF) on April 15, 2012 over bids by Vienna, Austria and Krakow, Poland.

Westcott will represent and communicate the strategic interests of USA Canoe/Kayak at the 2014 Canoe Slalom World Championships, including the successful execution of the event. She will ensure the event’s alignment with the longer-term goals of USA Canoe/Kayak to serve and support the National Slalom Program, grow the base of the sport and expand opportunities to partner with the International Canoe Federation.

Westcott will also support USA Canoe/Kayak’s interest in the long-term sustainability of the Adventure Sports Center International, host venue of the 2014 World Championships. The event will mark the 25th anniversary of the 1989 World Championships, which was held in the same county. The 1989 World Championships attracted more than 600 competitors representing 26 nations and more than 40,000 spectators.

Westcott will represent USA Canoe/Kayak at other national events that take place at the Adventure Sports Center International prior to the 2014 World Championships, including a test event in May 2013.
