Announcing the 2012 Junior National Slalom Team

May 21, 2012, 11:14 p.m. (ET)

The U.S. Junior Slalom Team will have a leg up on the competition heading into the 2012 ICF World U23 and Junior World Championships, July 11-15. Wausau, Wis. hosts both the World Championships and the U.S. Junior National Team Trials. The Trials concluded on Sunday, May 20 with 15 athletes named to the U.S. World Championships Team.

The U23 National Team members were chosen at the 2012 U.S. Olympic Team Trials in Charlotte, N.C., April 12-14. For these athletes, the weekend served as a training camp.

The U.S. Junior National Team athletes are:

Men’s K1

  • Michael Rudnitsky
  • Cole Moore
  • Cully Brown

Women’s K1

  • Anna Ifarraguerri
  • Evelyn Van Horn
  • Chelsea Easley

Men’s C1

  • Zach Lokken
  • Jordan Poffenberger
  • Andre Sanborn

Women’s C1

  • Hailey Thompson
  • Moriah Heaney
  • Chelsea Easley

Men’s C2

  • Bertrand/Rudnitsky
  • Machado/Coggan

Rafal Smolen, U.S. National Development Coach: “The competition was very close in several classes. The third places on the team in C1 men and K1 women were decided by less than 1 percentage point. The strongest performances this weekend were C1’s Zach Lokken and C1W’s Hailey Thompson. These two athletes showed potential to compete for medals at the Junior World Championships later in July this year. The competition was run very smoothly, except for the windy conditions on Sunday.”

Joe Jacobi, USA Canoe/Kayak CEO: "Giving our athletes an opportunity to gain experience on the course in Wausau is an important part of hosting the Junior and U-23 World Championships. Team Trials for the Juniors and the Training Camp for the U-23 athletes this week and weekend is a critical building block towards our success this summer in Wisconsin."
