The United States Kayak Polo Teams have returned from their first international competition of the year in Alberta, Canada. The tournament was held at the Kinsmen Sports Centre in Edmonton, February 11-12, 2012. The competition had two divisions, six teams in the A-Division and eight teams in the B-Division. The US Men’s Team placed 6th in the A-Division and the US Women’s Team 5th in the B-Division.

The US Men’s Team had a record of 1-4 after the initial round robin matches. The last three games were played tightly with final scores of 3-4, 2-3 and 4-5. These matches were played against the Welch Dragons and two different Canadian Men’s teams. The Men’s Team lost a tough game in the final round against the Leftovers to put them in 6th place.

The US Women’s Team has worked diligently to improve their ranking from their last international tournament in December of 2011, in San Marcos, TX. After the round robin matches, the Women’s Team was 3-4 which placed them in 5th going into the finals. Their final match was a tense one, played against the Canadian U21 Women’s Team. The US Women’s came out on top, earning 5th place, with a winning goal scored during a fast-paced sudden death round.

Congratulations to both teams on a well-played tournament. Look for more updates on the progress of these teams as they work toward the world championships in Poznan, Poland in September 2012.
