Down to the Wire
It’s all coming down to the wire! The final competition in 2008’s World Cup series will be held this weekend in Augsburg, Germany. The results from this event will determine the final nominations for the US Canoe/Kayak team that will represent the United States in the 2008 Olympic Games in Beijing, and the competition is incredibly tight! In each of the 4 categories, only 1 athlete (or team) will go to China, giving the US a full team of 5.
In the Men’s K1, 2004 Olympian Scott Parsons (Bethesda, MD) holds an 8-point lead over fellow ’04 Olympian Brett Heyl (Charlotte, NC), with Scott Mann (Charlotte, NC) 10 points out. Parson’s lead is bolstered by his second place finish in the 2007 World Cup. The US nominee will be determined after the finals on Saturday.
The Women’s K1 finds the race tightening to a 2 point margin with Zuzana Vanha (Charlotte, NC) holding a one-point lead over veteran Heather Corrie (Loughborough, England) and a 2-point lead over 17 year-old Caroline Queen (Darnestown, MD). The US nominee will be determined after the finals on Sunday.
The C1 competition is a mirror image of the K1W with Jeff Larimer (Marietta, GA) holding a one-point lead over Benn Fraker (Peachtree City, GA) and 2 points over Tad Dennis (Belmont, NC). The US nominee will be determined after the finals on Sunday.
Not to be outdone on the C2 team side, the first place team of Austin Crane (Charlotte, NC) and Scott McCleskey (Silva, NC) has a one-point lead over Casey Eichfeld (Drums, PA) and Rick Powell (Parkesburg, PA). The US nominees will be determined after the finals on Saturday.
