Hickox Accepted as 2008 Olympic Assistant Sprint Canoe/Kayak Coach

CHARLOTTE, N.C. - USA Canoe/Kayak announced Friday that the USOC Team Selection Working Group has accepted the nominations of Mac Hickox (Mississauga, Canada) as Assistant Sprint Coach and Stein Jorgensen (San Diego, Calif.) as Replacement Assistant Sprint Coach for the 2008 U.S. Olympic Sprint Canoe/Kayak Team.

Hickox will serve under U.S. Head Sprint Canoe/Kayak Coach Nathan Luce (Chula Vista, Calif.) at the 2008 Beijing Olympic Games. As a replacement coach, Jorgensen will serve as a substitute in the event that Hickox is unable to attend the Games. The nominations are pending final approval by the USOC Board of Directors.

Hickox, a U.S. Olympian (Canoe, 1968), 22-time Canadian champion and two time North American champion, joined USA Canoe/Kayak as National Development Director/Coach in 2007. As a coach, Hickox served as Canada 's Sprint Canoe/Kayak National Coach from 1972 to 1976 and Head Coach at the 1976 Montreal Olympic Games producing a silver medal in the men's single canoe. As Head Coach of the Mississauga Canoe Club (Mississauga, Canada), Hickox brought six Canadian national titles to the club in 12 years. He is a founder of the U.S. National Association of Coaches in Canoe and Kayak and the Canadian Association of Coaches in Canoe and Kayak. He was recipient of the Gilbert Award as Coach of the Year by the Canadian Canoe Association in 1996 and won the Air Canada Award as Canada's Coach of the Year in 1976. He is a 1983 inductee of the City of Mississauga, Ontario Hall of Fame and was named"One of the 25 Most Influential People in Mississauga Sport"1975-1999.

Jorgensen is a two-time Olympian (Kayak, 1996, 2004) and member of the U.S. National Team from 1994-2002. In 1995, Stein's K2 200-meter team was the last U.S. squad to win a World Championship title. Since 2002, Jorgensen has served as a volunteer coach with the San Diego Canoe and Kayak Team working with top-ranked U.S. junior paddlers. In 2007 he assisted USACK Sprint Head Coach, Nathan Luce the Olympic Training Center in Chula Vista, Calif. A member of the United States Olympic Committee, Charlotte, N.C. based USACK is the national governing body for the Olympic sports of Flatwater Sprint and Whitewater Slalom and official U.S. federation of the International Canoe Federation.
