Russian wins gold in 500-meter canoe single

BEIXIAOYING TOWN, China (AP) Maxim Opalev of Russia won the gold medal in men's 500-meter canoe single Saturday, giving him his third medal in the last three Olympics and first gold.
Opalev paddled away from a tight field to win in 1 minute, 47.140 seconds. He took bronze four years ago in the Athens Games and silver in Sydney.
David Cal of Spain won his second silver medal in two days, finishing in 1:48.397. He also finished second in the C-1.
Iurii Cheban of the Ukraine won bronze in 1:48.766.
