BEIXIAOYING TOWN, China (AP) Meng Guanliang and Yang Wenjun of China have won the gold medal in men's 500-meter canoe double, successfully defending their Olympic triumph in Athens.

Meng and Yang had the whole park wildly cheering when they paddled their way toward the finish line. They won on Saturday in 1 minute, 41.025 seconds - then they both fell into the water.

Meng and Yang's heads bobbed in the water and they smiled when their names flashed on the scoreboard. The Chinese tandem now have the country's only two gold medals in canoe racing.

Sergey Ulegin and Alexander Kostoglod of Russia won silver in 1:41.282.

The German pair of Christian Gille and Thomasz Wylenzek took bronze in 1:41.964. Wylenzek competed a day after he was treated for dehydration at a hospital.
