BEIXIAOYING TOWN, China (AP) Rain washed out Thursday's scheduled Olympic canoe-kayak events, including semifinals and the final of women's kayak single and the men's canoe double final.
The schedule was moved to Friday, which was to have been an off-day for the paddlers.
The canoe double semifinals were the only runs completed. The German team of Felix Michel and Sebastian Piersig had a flawless run through the gates in 94.38 seconds. They screamed in celebration as they crossed the finish line and exchanged a soaked high five.
Five other doubles advanced to the final, including brothers Peter and Pavol Hochschorner of Slovakia. They won the last two Olympic gold medals in this whitewater event.
In the women's kayak single, defending Olympic champion Elena Kaliska of Slovakia recorded the best combined time of 186.19 after Wednesday's heats. She'll be among 15 individuals who will compete in Friday's semifinals in hopes of reaching the finals later in the day.
Fans scattered to seats in the upper rows of the stadium where it was covered, and coaches and teammates of the canoers needed umbrellas as they sprinted down the course's sidewalk shouting encouragement.
