Two Athletes Selected to Represent the U.S. at World Marathon Championships

U.S.A. Canoe/Kayak announces the selection of Anne Louise Blanchard (Columbia, CT) and Kaitlyn McElroy  (Bethel, ME ) to represent the United States at the World Marathon Canoe/Kayak Championships, in Tyn Nad Vltavou, Czech Republic, September 20-21, 2008.   The pair secured spots on the U.S. National Team based on their first place finishes at the recent U.S. Marathon Team Trials held in Holyoke, MA. The 26 km  Marathon Trials was held on the Connecticut River and included 6 portages. The only women named to the team, Blanchard will compete at World’s in the women’s pairs event, and McElroy in both the women’s singles and pairs events.

Blanchard, an attorney with Connecticut Legal Services and McElroy, recently graduated from Bates College and train on the Connecticut River.  Each was part of a National Champion crew in the women’s fours events of the Sprint Kayaking National Championships held last week in Oklahoma City.

The athletes are raising funds to cover their airfare and lodging at Worlds; donations can be made to U.S. Women’s Marathon fund, c/o http://canoekayak.teamusa.org.
