The Games Open!

Aug. 09, 2008, 9 a.m. (ET)
Wow, what an evening. The opening ceremony was somewhere beyond spectacular. The sheer scale of it, especially the number of people involved, eclipsed the technology behind it. Not only were there tens of thousands of Chinese involved in the show, but they were not mere extras. Everyone was a skilled dancer/musician/acrobat/whatever. Those of us in the USOC section were constantly wondering what the organizers of the 2012 London Games must be thinking. How can they top that?
Getting home afterward proved far faster and easier than getting there: 30 minutes vs. two and a half hours!
The view from USOC was that our athletes (all the US -not just our USACK ones) did very well in the march. The new Ralph Lauren duds that were Norman Bellingham's inspiration looked sharp and everyone actually wore it. (David Lauren was here to inspect.) It was impressive how many pro athletes marched. Many NBA players, not just ours (plus Coach K), but Dirk Nowitski, Manu Ginobli, many others. When Yao Ming appeared to lead in the Chinese team it was magical.
Roger Federer carrying the Swiss flag was cool; so was Rafal Nadal, the Williams sisters, the Bryan bros., etc. The tennis team is staying with us at the Hilton, so I get to see them up close and large!

I have so much to do, I'm not sure when I'll get to actually see all the sites that we whiz by. I hope to report more tomorrow.

Did I mention before how hot it is? I bet I lost 5 pounds last night alone.
