Providing critically needed support across all of USA Canoe/Kayak Olympic disciplines. Annual fund gifts are the easiest ways to bolster USA Canoe/Kayak’s resources. You may designate your gift to specific purpose or to our general fund-which gives our Board of Directors the flexibility to deploy the funds where they are needed most.
Endowments are gifts that keep on giving. Endowments are permanently invested by USA Canoe/Kayak, generating interest that is used for the purposes that you choose to support.
A portion of the interest income is reinvested in the endowment’s principle each year, enabling it to grow and provide a long-enduring stream of income.
Think of a pledge as a gift with a payment plan. Pledges give donors the option to make payments toward a gift over time. Many donors who wish to make a big impact at USACK prefer pledges, but seek a more flexible approach of spreading payments over a predetermined span up to five years.
Memorial gifts are a special way to honor a friend or loved one who has passed away. By supporting USA Canoe/Kayak, these gifts ensure a legacy for the deceased that extends far into the future.
Honorary gifts are a meaningful way to pay tribute to a living person. It may honor a special occasion or achievement, or merely acknowledge the honoree’s importance in your life.
STOCKS, BONDS, OR MUTUAL FUNDS
Giving stock, instead of cash, as a donation can greatly benefit both parties. You will find that most non-profit organizations will accept stock as a gift or donation.
If the stock has increased in value from the time of purchase, the owner can avoid paying the capital gains tax by donating the security to another party. When the security is being donated to a non-profit the total amount will still be eligible for a tax deduction. Since taxation is avoided on the stock donation, the giver will be able to make a larger donation.
For example, let’s say you were looking to make a $1000 donation to USACK. You could either give cash or donate stock. Let’s assume you bought the stock for $700, but now it is worth $1.128.55. To make it simple, let’s assume capital gain’s tax is 30% of the stock appreciation. Selling the shares for cash would net about $1000 after capital gains tax ($1128.55-700)* 0.30) In this case, you should be indifferent between donating the entire stock or giving cash, as both choices will cost you $1000. However, USACK can receive more benefit from a stock donation, as they will receive a gift valued at $1,128.55 instead of the $1000 in cash.
When is it better to donate securities over cash? If your securities have increased in value since you purchased it, it is better to donate the securities to charity. If your securities have decreased in value since you bought it, it is better to sell the securities first and then donate the cash. We will be happy to help you with the transactions, just contact the USA Canoe/Kayak office.
