(LAS VEGAS, NEV.) – A group of nearly 300 boxers has been whittled down to 40 at the 2014 National Golden Gloves in Las Vegas, Nev. The top eight athletes in each of the 10 weight divisions competed in quarterfinal action on Thursday at the Las Vegas Hilton with all of the night’s victors advancing on to semifinal round action on Friday.

Two-time USA Boxing National Champion Leroy Davila (New Brunswick, N.J.) pulled out his second straight split decision of the tournament, defeating Joshua Franco (San Antonio, Texas) to advance on to Friday’s semifinal action. He will face Basil Nasser (Detroit, Mich.) for a spot in the light flyweight finale in his semifinal round contest. Adrian Servin (Phoenix, Ariz.) and Christian Carto (Pennsylvania) will battle in the second light flyweight semifinal on Friday night.

In the flyweight division, 2013 USA Boxing Youth National Champion Antonio Vargas (Kissimmee, Fla.) continued his outstanding boxing with a unanimous decision win over Kenyon Sessoms (Elizabeth, N.J.). Vargas’ victory earns him a spot in the semifinal round with Darren Cunningham (St. Louis, Mo.). The bout will be a rematch from the 2014 Junior and Youth Open earlier this year, which Vargas won. The first of two Montgomery brothers will compete in flyweight semifinal competition following his win in Thursday’s session. Mikhail Montgomery (Macon, Ga.) will face Christopher Colbert (Brooklyn, N.Y.) in the second flyweight bout on Friday.

The brotherly love theme continued in to the bantamweight division where defending champion Gary Antonio Russell (Capitol Heights, Md.) won a unanimous decision win over Eddie Dean (Flint, Mich.) to earn a spot in his second straight Golden Gloves semifinal. Russell will take on Hector Tanajara (San Antonio, Texas) in his semifinal contest. On the opposite side of the bracket, two former flyweight national champions faced off in bantamweight quarterfinal competition. Stephen Fulton, Jr. (Philadelphia, Pa.) took the victory in the battle, winning a 5-0 decision over Shawn Simpson (Chicago, Ill.). Fulton will challenge Ruben Villa (Salinas, Mich.) in Friday’s semifinal boxing.

He will battle Steven Ortiz (Newark, N.J.) in Friday’s action. William Foster (W. Haven, Conn.) and Eder Carrillo (Woodland, Calif.) will compete in the second lightweight semifinal bout.

Adric will compete in a semifinal showdown with Jason Ennis (Pennsylvania) on Friday night. The second Russell brother won the one of only two TKOs on the night in his semifinal contest with Dylan Henry (Omaha, Neb.). With the support of his brother, Gary Russell, Jr., in his corner, Gary Antuanne Russell (Capitol Heights, Md.) stopped Henry late in the bout to earn a semifinal contest with Arthur Porter (Monroe, Mich.).

Hometown favorite Quontez McGrath (Las Vegas, Nev.) won the first welterweight bout of Thursday’s competition, defeating Kenneth Thomas, Jr. (Indianapolis, Ind.) by 4-1 decision. McGrath will challenge the U.S. Army World Class Athlete Program’s Reyes Marquez (Colorado Springs, Colo.) in semifinal competition tomorrow. On the opposite side of the bracket, Tipton Walker (Benton Harbor, Mich.) will face Samuel Valentin (Land O’Lakes, Fla.).

Returning champion Marquis Moore (Colorado Springs, Colo.) punched his ticket for the semifinals with a 5-0 win over Adam Paolino (Warwick, R.I.) in the final middleweight bout of the quarterfinals. He will face 2013 USA Boxing Youth National Champion Alex Rincon (Carrollton, Texas) in his semifinal bout. The second semifinal will feature a match-up between two-time USA Boxing National Champion LeShawn Rodriguez (Shirley, N.Y.) and veteran Anthony Campbell (Covington, Tenn.)

2014 USA Boxing National Champion Joshua Temple (St. Louis, Mo.) kicked off Thursday’s heavyweight action in thundering fashion with an impressive TKO victory over Khalil Miller (Philadelphia, Pa.). Temple floored Miller at the :45 mark of the first round and the referee jumped in and halted the bout, giving him the TKO win. Temple moves on to a semifinal bout with Bryan Daniels (Worcester, Mass.) on Friday. Former Golden Gloves champion DeRae Crane (Colorado Springs, Colo.) advanced to the semifinals as well, winning a unanimous decision over Joshua Juarez (Laredo, Texas).
