March 29, 2014, 12:21 p.m. (ET)

Nine top female boxers will face off with their Canadian counterparts in the first international dual of 2014 today at the Olympic Training Center in Colorado Springs, Colo. The two teams have been training together throughout the past week in preparation for this evening’s showdown, which will begin at 5 p.m. in Sports Center I at the Olympic Training Complex.

Three Olympians will take the ring in dual competition, led by 2012 U.S. Olympic bronze medalist Marlen Esparza (Houston, Texas) in a bout with Canada’s Taveena Kum. The flyweight contest will be the first international bout of the year for Esparza, who boasts a lengthy international resume. Esparza’s Olympic teammate and fellow resident athlete, Queen Underwood (Seattle, Wash.) will battle Caroline Veyre of Canada in lightweight action while three-time Canadian World Champion Mary Spencer faces off with international veteran Franchon Crews (Baltimore, Md.).

The event will begin with two bouts in the youth division prior to seven elite division bouts. 2012 World Champion Tiara Brown (Fort Myers, Fla.) and World Championships bronze medalist Christina Cruz (New York, N.Y.) return to international action in the featherweight and bantamweight division respectively in today’s competition as well.  For today’s full bout sheet, click here.
