Quarterfinal Competition Highlights Day Two at the 2014 Junior Olympic National Championships

June 12, 2014, 8:58 p.m. (ET)

(CHARLESTON, W. VA.) – The 2014 USA Boxing Junior Olympic National Championships moved in to day two on Thursday in Charleston, W. Va. The tournament competitors boxed in 59 quarterfinal bouts with action taking place in two rings simultaneously at the Charleston Civic Center. Thursday’s 118 quarterfinal victors all earned spots in Friday’s semifinal round competition with their wins in today’s action.

Two of the defending champions and 2013 outstanding boxer award winners enjoyed decisive victories in the day’s afternoon competition. Female bantamweight Jayda Thomas (Detroit, Mich.), a product of the famed Kronk gym in Detroit, made quite an impression in the 2013 event. She added to her growing reputation with a first round TKO over Juanita Chavez (Racine, Wis.) in her 2014 tournament opener.

Male light flyweight Dylan Price (Sickerville, N.J.) claimed his second win of the tournament in his quarterfinal match-up with Kawelo Alcos (Aiea, Hawaii). Price took a unanimous decision over Alcos in the bout to move on to his second straight Junior Olympic semifinals.

The Morales brothers traveled all the way from Vancouver, Wash., to compete in the 2014 Junior Olympic National Championships and both of them will return home with hardware. Light flyweight Tyler Morales (Vancouver, Wash.) won a 3-0 decision over Tariq Gordon (Cincinnati, Ohio) while 2014 Junior Olympic titlist Victor Morales (Vancouver, Wash.) took a third round TKO over Hilario Vasquez III (Laredo, Texas) in bantamweight action.

2014 Junior Open champion Troy Isley (Alexandria, Va.) moved up two weight divisions to light middleweight for the Junior Olympic National Championships and he showcased his power in the new weight division on Thursday. Isley won a first round TKO over Nicholas Silva (Lowell, Mass.) in their quarterfinal contest to advance to the semifinal round.

Isley’s fellow Junior Open titlist Bryan Lua (Madera, Calif.) earned a quarterfinal victory on Thursday as well. Lua took a 2-1 decision over Michael Reyes (Oklahoma City, Okla.) in lightweight competition to punch his ticket for the semifinal round.

The event will move in to semifinal competition on Friday with sessions at noon and 6 p.m., at the Charleston Civic Center.

Junior Olympic National Championships tickets are only $10 and can be purchased online at ticketmaster.com or at the door. Children under 12 will be admitted to the event free of charge.

USA Boxing’s Junior Olympic program is a critical developmental pipeline for the organization and has consistently produced future Olympians and professional world champions. 2012 Olympic Gold Medalist Claressa Shields (Flint, Mich.) won the 2011 event in Mobile prior to claiming the first-ever middleweight gold in women’s Olympic boxing action.
