The Male Competitors Headline the First Day of the 2014 USA Boxing Elite National Championships

(SPOKANE, WASH.) – Day one of the 2014 USA Boxing Elite National Championships is in the books following 21 first round bouts at the HUB Sports Center in Spokane, Wash., on Monday night. All of the evening’s action took place in the elite men’s division with boxers competing in the bantamweight, light welterweight, welterweight and middleweight classes on the opening day of competition. 

A home state boxer took the first win of the tournament as Jerrell Barbour (Tacoma, Wash.) earned a unanimous decision victory over 2013 USA Boxing National Championships bronze medalist Cristian Williams (Crete, Ill.) in the bantamweight division.

Jonathan Esquivel (Anaheim, Calif.) earned the first TKO win of the tournament, claiming a victory in the third round over Travis Jerig (Zanesville, Ohio) in their middleweight contest. Esquivel will face off with Shane Mosley, Jr. (Upland, Calif.) in middleweight quarterfinal action on Wednesday.

Anthony Campbell (Covington, Tenn.) enjoyed a short night in his middleweight contest as well, taking a third round knockout over Keoki Anaya (Port Hueneme, Calif.) in his first bout of the 2014 USA Boxing Elite National Championships.

Women’s action will begin on Tuesday with first round bouts in the bantamweight and light welterweight divisions on day two of tournament action. The elite men will return to the ring on Tuesday as well, competing in 32 bouts on Tuesday evening. 

Tuesday’s bouts will start at 5 p.m., at the HUB Sports Center with 35 contests split across the two rings. Preliminary round competition will conclude on Wednesday in bouts beginning at 11 a.m., and 5 p.m., at the HUB.

Both of the United States’ last two Olympic gold medalists, Andre Ward and Claressa Shields, were on hand for the night’s action in Spokane. Ward, a two-time U.S. National Champion in his amateur days, posed for pictures with the fans on hand and offered encouraged to the tournament participants while enjoying the bouts with his son Malachi.

The USA Boxing National Championships began in 1888 and many of the greatest champions in the history of the sweet science got their start in the nation’s premier national championship event, including: Cassius Clay (later Muhammad Ali), Sugar Ray Leonard, Oscar de la Hoya, Floyd Mayweather, Jr., and Andre Ward.
