Top Young Athletes Grab Final Round Berths in 2014 Junior and Youth Open Semifinal Action in Reno

Jan. 11, 2014, 1:25 a.m. (ET)

(RENO, NEV.) – The 2014 Junior and Youth Open finalists are now determined following five hours of semifinal competition on Friday at the Grand Sierra Resort in Reno, Nev. Boxers in all four age divisions took the ring on Friday evening with 43 boxers claiming berths in their respective championship bouts.

Several national champions and three reigning world champions all moved one step closer to another national title with victories on Friday. Team USA’s third world champion Jajaira Gonzalez (Glendora, Calif.) finally took the ring for her first bout of the tournament in a match-up with fellow 2013 Junior Open titlist and hometown favorite Jessica Galvez (Sparks, Nev.). Gonzalez unloaded punches from the opening bell and didn’t stop, peppering Galvez with a barrage of shots. After two standing eight counts, the referee stopped the bout, giving Gonzalez a TKO victory in the first round.

Her fellow world champions Caitlin Orosco (Anaheim, Calif.) and Shakur Stevenson (Newark, N.J.) competed in back-to-back bouts in Friday’s semifinal action. Both boxers earned unanimous decision victories in their semifinal matches, advancing both boxers on to the championship round. Orosco will face Odalys Camacho (Bakersfield, Calif.) in the youth female flyweight finale following her upset win over 2013 USA Boxing youth national champion Marisol Lopez (Stratford, Calif.). The youth men’s flyweight finale will be one of the most anticipated of the tournament as Stevenson faces off with 2013 USA Boxing youth national champion Antonio Vargas (Kissimmee, Fla.) for the 2014 Junior and Youth Open title.

2013 Junior Olympic national championships silver medalist Edgar Berlanga (Brooklyn, N.Y.) and 2013 Team USA member John Williams (Baton Rouge, La.) faced off in one of the best bouts of the night in youth men’s welterweight semifinal action. Both boxers landed heavy shots during the three-round contest, but it was Williams taking the unanimous decision victory. He will face 2013 Junior Open champion Javier Estrada (Palmdale, Calif.) in the welterweight finale on Saturday afternoon.

2013 Junior Olympic national champion Charles Conwell (Cleveland, Ohio) will take on 2013 Junior Olympic national championships silver medalist Manjaro Hills, Jr. (Baton Rouge, La.) in the middleweight championship bout following semifinal victories by both boxers on Friday evening.

In junior division action, 2013 Junior World Championships silver medalist Daniel Gonzalez (Moreno Valley, Calif.) advanced to his second straight Junior Open final round bout with another unanimous decision win on Friday. He will battle hometown boxer David Marfil (Sparks, Nev.) in championship round action on Saturday.

Gonzalez’s fellow 2013 national team member Devin Haney (Las Vegas, Nev.) earned a berth in the junior men’s featherweight final round contest with a unanimous decision win on Friday as well. Haney defeated Alejandro Campa (Phoenix, Ariz.) in Friday’s semifinal competition to move on to a championship bout with Ryan Garcia (Adelanto, Calif.).

Saturday’s championship round action will begin at noon at the Grand Sierra Resort in Reno with 35 final round contests taking place on the final day of action.

USA Boxing’s junior and youth programs are critical to the organization’s developmental pipeline and have consistently produced Olympians and World Champions, including the United States’ last two Olympic gold medalists Andre Ward (2004) and Claressa Shields (2012).
