Three American Boxers to Open Youth Olympic Games Action in China
(COLORADO SPRINGS, COLO.) – The day that the U.S. Youth Olympic Games boxing team has been anticipating for months is nearly upon us. Three American boxers will compete in opening round action at the 2014 Youth Olympic Games on Saturday following today’s tournament draw in Nanjing, China. Male flyweight Shakur Stevenson (Newark, N.J.), female middleweight Martha Fabela (Oakland, Calif.), and male super heavyweight Darmani Rock (Philadelphia, Pa.) will all take the ring in Saturday’s first round competition while female lightweight Jajaira Gonzalez (Glendora, Calif.) received a bye.
Fabela will open Youth Olympic Games competition for the United States squad in a middleweight battle with 2014 Youth Olympic Games qualifier silver medalist Caitlin Parker of Australia. The 18-year-old American will be looking to avenge a loss from the recent Golden Glove of Vovjodina youth tournament in Serbia where Parker defeated Fabela en route to a gold medal. The two will face off in the sixth bout of the afternoon session at approximately 3:30 p.m. local time (3:30 a.m. ET).
With a perfect 14-0 international record and gold medal victories in both the 2013 Junior World Championships and 2014 Youth World Championships, Stevenson is one of the Youth Olympic favorites. The 17-year-old New Jersey native has plans to live up to the hype when he commences competition on Saturday in a match-up with European Junior Champion Daniel Asenov of Bulgaria. The two have never met as Asenov was on the opposite side of the bracket at the recent Youth World Championships. Stevenson and Asenov will also compete in Saturday’s afternoon competition, boxing two bouts after Fabela at approximately 4:00 p.m. local time (4:00 a.m. ET).
Rock will complete the roster of Team USA’s first round bouts on Saturday. His super heavyweight preliminary contest will feature a match-up with Argentina’s Kevin Espindola in the first contest between the two boxers. Rock will compete in one of the last bouts of the day, boxing in the 11th match of Saturday evening’s action at approximately 9:30 p.m. local time (9:00 a.m. ET).
Following a bye in Saturday’s first round competition, Gonzalez will face off with 2013 Youth World Champion Agnes Alexiusson in Sunday’s afternoon action. The bout will be a rematch from the 2014 Youth Olympic Games qualifier, which Gonzalez won to take the gold medal. Alexiusson will be looking for revenge in their second showdown on Sunday with the winner of their rematch advancing on to the Youth Olympic Games finals.
Coach Edward Rivas (Colorado Springs, Colo.) is leading the United States team in Youth Olympic Games competition.
