Three Elite American Boxers Claim First Round Victories at the Felix Stamm Tournament in Poland

(COLORADO SPRINGS, COLO.) – Four U.S. boxers traveled overseas for the 2014 Felix Stamm Tournament, April 9-12 in Warsaw, Poland. The event is the second elite international competition of the year for USA Boxing, and all three of the American athletes boxing in the first day of action took victories on Wednesday. 2012 Olympic bronze medalist Marlen Esparza (Houston, Texas), lightweight Genaro Gamez (San Diego, Calif.), and super heavyweight Cam F. Awesome (Lenexa, Kansas) emerged victorious in first round action in Poland. 

Esparza faced off with Ireland’s Ceire Smith in her first round bout and she won a unanimous decision over the Irish boxer. Gamez battled Poland’s Polski Mateusz in lightweight action, winning a split decision victory to advance on in tournament competition. Awesome claimed the third victory of the day for Team USA, taking a 2-1 decision over Russia’s Gimbatov Gasan.

All four U.S. boxers will compete in quarterfinal competition on Thursday with welterweight Jose Alday (Odessa, Texas) taking part in his first bout of the tournament in a match-up with Georgia’s Kvachatdze Zaal. Esparza will battle Poland’s Sandra Drabik while Awesome faces off with Ukraine’s Sirenko Vladyslav and Gamez challenges Ireland’s David Oliver Joyce. 

The event is the second international competition of the year for all four American boxers with Gamez, Alday and Awesome having boxed in the Independence Cup in the Dominican Republic and Esparza coming off a victory in the USA vs. Canada Dual. Luis Gamez (San Diego, Calif.) and Jose Alday, Sr. (Odessa, Texas) are serving as the team coaches with Dr. Sheryl Wulkan (Old Westbury, N.Y.).
