(COLORADO SPRINGS, COLO.) – Four American boxers claimed first round wins at the 2013 Junior World Championships at the Kiev Palace of Sports in Kiev, Ukraine on Monday. Welterweight Javier Estrada (Palmdale, Calif.) recorded the first win of the day prior to an undefeated evening session for the U.S. squad, which showcased wins from light flyweight Daniel Gonzalez (Moreno Valley, Calif.), featherweight Michael Nelson (Mansfield, Ohio) and junior middleweight Alexis Rocha (Santa Ana, Calif.). Flyweight Joseph Cuellar (Tulare, Calif.) suffered the lone loss of the day for the United States, dropping the first American bout of the day.
Estrada was the first U.S. victor of Monday’s action, taking a 2-1 vwin over Andrii Tereheria of Ukraine on his opponent’s home soil. Estrada’s victory over the Ukrainian national champion advanced him on to a second round contest with Asian Junior Championships bronze medalist Aditya Maan of India on Wednesday afternoon.
Gonzalez opened the evening action for Team USA, taking the first unanimous decision of the event for the United States. He won a 3-0 decision over Hungary’s Sandor Tar in the light flyweight contest to move on to a second round contest against Mexico’s Luis Pacheco on Wednesday afternoon.
Nelson took a second straight unanimous decision in his bout with Lithuania’s Deividas Mikalauskas in featherweight action. He will also enjoy a day off before returning to action on Wednesday afternoon in a bout with Uzbekistan’s Boburmirzo Tolibov.
Junior middleweight Alexis Rocha (Santa Ana, Calif.) closed the day’s action with a bang in his showdown with Albania’s Xheison Tusha. Rocha won a TKO victory over Tusha at the :39 second mark of the second round to join his teammates in Wednesday’s second round competition. He will face Slovenia’s Alen Pauman for a spot in the quarterfinal round.
Cuellar dropped his flyweight contest to Georgia’s Gagik Pozoyan by a 2-1 margin, eliminating him from the tournament.
Six United States boxers will compete in Tuesday’s action. Bantamweight Devin Haney (Las Vegas, Nev.) will return to the ring for a bout with Kazakhstan’s Sabyrzhan Abilov just two days after his first round win. Also in afternoon action, lightweight Keoni Ardic, Jr. (Haleiwa, Hawaii) will battle fellow Junior National Champion David Cotrc of the Czech Republic. Following his round bye, middleweight Eric Murguia (Mission Hills, Calif.) will face a stern test in the form of former European Junior Champion, Vitaly Bakhmatov of Russia. Super heavyweight Pano Tiatia will complete the trio of United States’ boxers competing in the day’s early session, battling Algerian Junior National Champion, Lyes Belahouane.
In evening action, Shakur Stevenson (Newark, N.J.) will make his world championships debut, taking on Asian Junior Championships silver medalist Bakhodur Usmonov of Tajikistan. Light welterweight Brandon Trejo (Napa, Calif.) received a first round bye and will begin tournament competition on Tuesday night in a bout with 2012 Swedish Junior National Champion Adam Chartoi.
Junior World Championships preliminary round action will continue through Friday with medal round competition taking place on Saturday and the championship bouts being contested on Sunday. Twelve United States boxers remain in contention for a medal at the event, which takes place every two years.
