(COLORADO SPRINGS, COLO.) – American lightweight Kenneth Sims Jr. (Chicago, Ill.) hoped to avenge the loss of 2012 U.S. Olympian Jose Ramirez (Avenal, Calif.) in London with a second round victory in today’s action at the 2013 Elite Men’s World Championships. Yet Sims suffered the same fate in his second round contest with 2012 Olympian Fazliddin Gaibnazarov of Uzbekistan in Sunday’s action at the Boluan Sholak Cultural Sports Palace in Almaty, Kazakhstan.
Gaibnazarov won a unanimous decision victory over Sims in their lightweight preliminary contest. Despite the 3-0 judges’ score, the bout was extremely close with the contest going in to the final round up for grabs on two of the official scorecards. However all three judges gave the final round to the number two seed from Uzbekistan, ending Sims’ dreams of his first world championship.
Super heavyweight Cam F. Awesome (Lenexa, Kansas) is the remaining competitor for the United States squad and he will return to action on Tuesday with a tough match-up of his own. Awesome will face off with number one seed Magomedrasul Medzhidov of Azerbaijan on the final day of preliminary action in Almaty. Awesome, the 2012 U.S. Olympic Team Trials champion, is the only U.S. boxer with World Championships experience prior to the 2013 event in Kazakhstan.
Team USA will not compete in Monday’s preliminary round action in Almaty.
