(COLORADO SPRINGS, COLO.) – The two-day winning streak for the United States squad came to an end on Wednesday at the 2013 Elite Men’s World Championships in Almaty, Kazakhstan. Welterweight Jamontay Clark (Cincinnati, Ohio) and light heavyweight Geremias Torres (Holyoke, Mass.) both fell in today’s preliminary round action at the Boluan Sholak Cultural & Sports Palace.

Clark was the first American boxer to compete on the day, facing off with Moldova’s Vasili Belous in afternoon action. Belous won a 3-0 decision over Clark, but the contest was extremely close throughout. Clark dropped the bout by only one point on two of the three judges’ scorecards, eliminating him from his first World Championships.

Torres took the ring later in the afternoon session for his light heavyweight contest with Mongolia’s Erdenebayer Sandagsuren. The American boxer could not handle Sandagsuren’s powerful onslaught and the Mongolian boxer won a TKO victory over Torres in the third round of their preliminary round contest.

Bantamweight Eduardo Martinez (Aurora, Ill.) and middleweight LeShawn Rodriquez (Shirley, N.Y.) will look to turn the tide when they compete in Thursday’s preliminary round competition. Martinez will battle Turkey’s Selcuk Eker in the first bout of the evening session while Rodriquez faces off with Vitali Bandarenka of Belarus in afternoon action.
