(COLORADO SPRINGS, COLO.) – Eight United States boxers will vie for gold in final round action at the Cheo Aponte tournament following four more U.S. victories in Friday’s semifinal action. Light welterweight Jose Alday (Odessa, Texas), welterweight Jamontay Clark (Cincinnati, Ohio), heavyweight Michael Hilton (Trenton, N.J.) and super heavyweight Cam F. Awesome (Lenexa, Kansas) all claimed semifinal wins in tonight’s competition.
Alday, Hilton and Awesome all boxed in their first bout of the 2013 Cheo Aponte Tournament with each member of the trio enjoying a victorious debut. It was Alday opening the night of action for his U.S. squad and he did so in a battle with a host nation boxer. Yet Alday was not deterred, winning a 3-0 decision over Puerto Rico’s Hector Ortiz to move on to the light welterweight finale.
Clark has boxed every day of the tournament and the welterweight recorded his third victory of the event in Friday’s semifinal action. He earned the second unanimous decision of the night, defeating the Dominican Republic’s Johan Santos to advance on to final round action.
Hilton put on a strong performance in his heavyweight showdown with Puerto Ricos’ Sahret Delgado. The 2013 USA Boxing National Champion earned his first international win, taking a TKO over Delgado in the third round of their semifinal match-up. The victory moves Hilton on to the heavyweight final where he will try to add a Cheo Aponte gold medal to his resume.
Awesome claimed the last spot in the Cheo Aponte finals with a victory in his semifinal contest with Brazil’s Johnny Kleuge. The most experienced member of the squad, Awesome won a 3-0 decision over Kleuge to move on to a final round match-up with Puerto Rico.
Light heavyweight Geremias Torres (Holyoke, Mass.) suffered the lone loss of the night for the U.S. squad, dropping a 3-0 decision to Brazil’s Michael Borges.
Light flyweight Leroy Davila (New Brunswick, N.J.) will compete in his first bout of the tournament in tomorrow’s finals, joining tonight’s winners along with flyweight Shawn Simpson (Chicago, Ill.), female flyweight Virginia Fuchs (Kemah, Texas), and female lightweight Tiara Brown (Fort Myers, Fla.) in the championship round.
