Four US Boxers Advance on the Second Day of Cheo Aponte Tournament Action in Puerto Rico

(COLORADO SPRINGS, COLO.) – The United States squad recorded four victories on day two of the Cheo Aponte Tournament in Caguas City, Puerto Rico on Thursday evening. Team USA’s two female competitors, Virginia Fuchs (Kemah, Texas) and Tiara Brown (Fort Myers, Fla.), both enjoyed dominating wins in their opening bouts in Puerto Rico. Flyweight Shawn Simpson (Chicago, Ill.) and welterweight Jamontay Clark (Cincinnati, Ohio) advanced as well with unanimous decision victories.

Simpson earned the first win of the night for Team USA, taking a unanimous decision victory over Puerto Rico’s Jan Lopez in the opening bout of the session. Simpson’s win moves on him to the flyweight finale where he will face a second Puerto Rican opponent, Jantony Ortiz, for the Cheo Aponte title.

Team USA enjoyed success in the female flyweight contest as well with Fuchs scoring a second round TKO win over Puerto Rico’s own Jennifer Morales. She will take on a second Puerto Rican opponent in the championship bout on Saturday.

Brown, the 2012 World Champion, also enjoyed a quick first outing. Utilizing effective body work, Brown claimed a second round stoppage victory over Puerto Rico’s Cristal Montalvo in their semifinal contest to move on to the finals. She will take on a tougher test in the lightweight championship bout, facing 2011 Pan American Games champion Kiria Tapia of Puerto Rico.

Clark earned his second victory of the Cheo Aponte tournament in welterweight action, taking a unanimous decision win over Chile’s Daniel Munoz. He will compete in semifinal competition this evening, battling the Dominican Republic’s Johan Santos for a spot in the championship bout.

Lightweight Luis Sedano (Duarte, Calif.) dropped his second bout of the tournament, losing a 3-0 decision to Puerto Rico’s Danielito Zorrilla. Middleweight Le’Shawn Rodriquez (Shirley, N.Y.) fell to Brazil’s Lucas Maritins in the final U.S. bout of the night, eliminating him from contention.

Light welterweight Jose Alday (Odessa, Texas), light heavyweight Geremias Torres (Holyoke, Mass.), heavyweight Michael Hilton (Trenton, N.J.), and super heavyweight Cam F. Awesome (Lenexa, Kansas) will all compete in their first bout of the tournament this evening, joining Clark in tonight’s action.
