Team USA Scores Two Victories on the First Day of the Cheo Aponte Tournament in Puerto Rico
(COLORADO SPRINGS, COLO.) – Team USA is boxing in the final tournament of a four-event international swing this week in Caguas City, Puerto Rico. The Cheo Aponte tournament opened competition on Wednesday and the United States earned two victories in the day’s preliminary round action. Lightweight Luis Sedano (Duarte, Calif.) and welterweight Jamontay Clark (Cincinnati, Ohio) each claimed opening round victories with bantamweight Eduardo Martinez (Aurora, Ill.) dropping a closely contested bout.
Sedano won a second round TKO over T. Faxley from Barbados in his first international contest. He will battle host nation boxer D. Zarrila of Puerto Rico in his second bout of the tournament. Clark faced off with Puerto Rico’s Luis Sanchez in welterweight action. His first round victory moves Clark on to a quarterfinal contest with Chile’s D. Munoz. Martinez fell to Puerto Rico’s own Freddy Ortiz in the first U.S. bout of the tournament.
Team USA’s two female representatives, flyweight Virginia Fuchs (Kemah, Texas) and lightweight Tiara Brown (Fort Myers, Fla.) along with male flyweight Shawn Simpson (Chicago, Ill.) and male middleweight Le'Shawn Rodriquez (Shirley, N.Y.) will compete in today’s action. Fuchs, Brown and Simpson will face host nation Puerto Rico in their tournament openers while Rodriquez will take on a Brazilian opponent.
Friday’s competition will feature the event debuts for light welterweight Jose Alday (Odessa, Texas), light heavyweight Geremias Torres (Holyoke, Mass.) and super heavyweight Cam F. Awesome (Lenexa, Kansas). Alday will take on an opponent from Puerto Rico while Torres and Awesome challenge Brazilian foes.
Light flyweight Leroy Davila (New Brunswick, N.J.) will have to wait until final round action to compete for the first time in Puerto Rico when he will face a host nation boxer for the gold medal.
USA Boxing International Teaching Coach Pedro Roque (Colorado Springs, Colo.), Kevin Benford (Cincinnati, Ohio) and Steve Rivera (Somerset, N.J.) are leading the United States team in Puerto Rico with Dr. Nicholas Piantanida (Colorado Springs, Colo.) joining the squad as the Team Physician.
The U.S. competitors will remain in Puerto Rico following the Cheo Aponte Tournament to compete in the Olympic Cup before returning home to the United States on June 7.
