Team USA Advances in Klitchko Brothers Tournament Action
COLORADO SPRINGS, CO) – The Youth Men National Team has been gaining valuable international experience at the Klitchko Brother’s tournament in Berdichev, Ukraine this week. For these nine champions of the 2013 USA Boxing National Championships, this is their first competition of the year with Team USA.
Competition kicked off on Monday with flyweight Antonio Vargas (Kissimmee, Fla.) advancing over Nikolay Vatsak of Ukraine and bantamweightJarico O’Quinn falling to his Chinese opponent, Long Wang. In the second session on Tuesday, welterweight Kareem Martin (Clinton, Md.) earned a victory over Yelaman Serikbay of Kazakhstan while light welterweight Alexis Urbina (Phoenix, Ariz.) was defeated by Edgar Gryigoryan of Ukraine. Urbina, though disappointed with his early elimination, is very motivated to get back in the gym as he shared via Twitter, “I learned many things today and will be better prepared next time…this is just the beginning.”
Wednesday brought another exciting day in Ukraine with Team USA going 2-2. Light flyweight Gilbert Renteria (Houston, Texas) won his bout againstNikita Charuta of Ukraine and will compete in the semifinals today. In quarterfinal action, lightweight Lamont Roach (Upper Marlboro, Md.) emerged victorious against China’s Shuai Liu Xiao. Light heavyweight Elvis Figueroa (New Haven, Conn.) was defeated by Rahil Mamedly of Azerbaijan and super heavyweight Ronnie Cleland II (Butte, Mont.) fell to Ukraine’s Stas Arhipenko.
Along with Renteria’s semifinal bout, Antonio Vargas (Kissimmee, Fla.), Alex Rincon (Carrollton, Texas), and Martin will compete in quarterfinals today.
2000 Olympic Coach Israel Acosta (Milwaukee, Wis.), Bernard Roach (Temple Hills, Md.), and Jose Renteria, Jr. (Houston, Texas) are coaching the team with Dr. Timothy Beste (Flower Mound, Texas) serving as the team doctor.
