COLORADO SPRINGS, COLO.) – Flyweight Shawn Simpson (Chicago, Ill.) and super heavyweight Cam F. Awesome (Lenexa, Kansas) both advanced on the third day of Olympic Cup competition in Salinas, Puerto Rico on Wednesday. Two of the most internationally experienced boxers on the U.S. squad, Simpson and Awesome will return to the ring in today’s competition.
Simpson advanced to tonight’s action with a walkover over Puerto Rico’s Emanuel Rodriguez in the first U.S. bout of the night. Awesome continued his winning streak on Wednesday with a 3-0 victory over Johnny Kluge of Brazil in their super heavyweight match-up.
2012 Featherweight World Champion Tiara Brown (Fort Myers, Fla.) faced off in another closely contested bout with Puerto Rican favorite Kiria Tapia. Unfortunately it was Tapia taking the 2-1 decision over Brown on her home soil. Brown’s male counterpart Luis Sedano (Duarte, Calif.) lost his lightweight bout as well, dropping a 3-0 decision to Puerto Rico’s Jose Rosario. Light heavyweight Geremias Torres (Holyoke, Mass.) fell by split decision to Michael Borges of Brazil.
Six U.S. boxers will take the ring in the final day of competition in Puerto Rico tonight with light flyweight Leroy Davila (New Brunswick, N.J.), flyweight Virginia Fuchs (Kemah, Texas), light welterweight Jose Alday (Odessa, Texas), and middleweight LeShawn Rodriguez (Shirley, N.Y.) joining Simpson and Awesome.
