Jul 11 Team USA Opens Makar Mazai Competition

(COLORADO SPRINGS, COLO.) – Team USA opened competition in its eighth international event of 2013 at the Makar Mazai Memorial in Mariupol, Ukraine on Wednesday. All of the U.S. team members competed in the first two days of tournament action with four athletes advancing to the medal rounds in the European event. 

Light flyweight Leroy Davila (New Brunswick, N.J.), flyweight Malik Jackson (Washington DC), heavyweight Michael Hilton (Trenton, N.J.), and super heavyweight Cam F. Awesome (Lenexa, Kansas) all claimed victories in Thursday’s competition. Welterweight Jamontay Clark (Cincinnati, Ohio) was victorious in his opener with Kyrgyzstan on Wednesday but fell to a hometown boxer by split decision in today’s competition. 

Davila boxed in semifinal action in his first bout of the tournament on Thursday, winning a unanimous decision over his Ukranian opponent. Jackson made his international debut on Thursday after missing the recent trip to Puerto Rico due to school obligations. The 18-year-old won a 3-0 victory over Moldova’s Dmitriy Sukhodolskiy in the quarterfinal contest to move on to semifinal round action. Hilton took a split decision victory in his match-up with Ukraine’s own Pavel Doroshilov and will compete for a berth in the finals in his next bout. Awesome continued his 2013 winning streak with a unanimous decision win over Ukraine’s Aleksey Zhuk to join his teammates in the semifinal round. 

Bantamweight Eduardo Martinez (Aurora, Ill.) dropped a 3-0 decision in his Thursday contest while light welterweight Jose Alday (Odessa, Texas) and light heavyweight John Magda (Rutherford, N.J.) lost split decisions in their quarterfinal contests. 

Jackson, Hilton and Awesome will all compete in semifinal action on Friday with Davila enjoying a day off before his light flyweight finale on Saturday. Coaches Kevin Benford (Cincinnati, Ohio) and Kenneth Sims, Sr. (Chicago, Ill.) are assisting Team USA at the Makar Mazai Memorial.
