Nine Young Boxers Advance to the Semifinals with Quarterfinal Wins in Reno

(COLORADO SPRINGS, COLO.) – The Junior World Team Open moved into quarterfinal round competition on Wednesday at the Grand Sierra Resort in Reno, Nev., and nine young boxers advanced to the medal rounds with victories on the second day of action. Male boxers in the light bantamweight, bantamweight and featherweight divisions took the ring with all of the victors earning spots in Thursday’s semifinals.

Light bantamweight Shakur Stevenson (Newark, N.J.) won the lone light bantamweight contest of the night, taking a 17-11 decision over Bryan Lua (Madera, Calif.) in the opening bout of the session. Stevenson moves on to a semifinal bout with Ryan Garcia (Adelanto, Calif.) on Thursday. 

In bantamweight competition, Isidro Ochoa (Fresno, Calif.) and Adolfo Alanis (Edinburg, Texas) each claimed their second victory of the tournament on Wednesday evening. Ochoa defeated Dominic Serna (Indio, Calif.) while Alanis earned a win over hometown boxer Humberto Guillen, Jr. (Reno, Nev.). In Thursday’s action, Ochoa will face Brandon Vega (Cleveland, Ohio) and Alanis will battle Devin Haney (Las Vegas, Nev.) for a berth in the finals. 

The featherweight class closed the night’s tournament competition with four quarterfinal contests on Wednesday. Two California boxers – Xavier Martinez (Sacramento, Calif.) and Garrett Rincon (Irvine, Calif.) moved on to the semifinals along with hometown competitor Mario Martinez (Sparks, Nev.) and Ohio native Michael Nelson (Mansfield, Ohio). All four of them will return to the ring for a shot at championship night on Thursday.

Thursday’s action will feature the longest session of the tournament with 20 semifinal bouts being contested in 11 weight divisions. The full bout sheet for tonight’s action can be found below. All of the winners from Thursday’s semifinals will move on to Friday’s championship round.
