Three American Boxers Win Opening Round Bouts on Friday

(COLORADO SPRINGS, COLO.) – Team USA claimed three victories on the second day of Men’s Continental Championships action in Santiago, Chile on Friday. Bantamweight Eduardo Martinez (Aurora, Ill.), welterweight Jamtonay Clark (Cincinnati, Ohio) and middleweight LeShawn Rodriguez (Shirley, N.Y.) each won their tournament openers on Friday with flyweight Malik Jackson (Washington DC) and light heavyweight Geremias Torres (Holyoke, Mass.) falling to tough opponents in their contests. 

Martinez was the second U.S. boxer to take the ring, competing early in the second session of the day. He won a won a convincing, 3-0 decision over home nation boxer Vojnic Opazo of Chile in their match-up to advance to today’s action, where he will face Venezuela’s Yonni Blanco. 

Welterweight Jamontay Clark (Cincinnati, Ohio) opened the final session of the day in winning fashion in his bout with Trinidad and Tobago’s Akiel Outram. The tall welterweight claimed the second straight unanimous decision win for his U.S. squad to advance to quarterfinal action. He will battle Cuba’s Arisnoidys Despaigne in today’s bout. 

Rodriquez closed Friday’s action for the United States squad and he did so in thundering fashion in his match-up with the Bahamas’ Carl Heild. The middleweight stopped Heild in the final round, winning a third round knockout to advance on to a Saturday battle with an opponent sharing the same last name as Clark’s foe, Yasiel Despaigne.

Jackson drew a tough assignment in his first bout in continental action, facing 2012 Olympian Jantony Ortiz of Puerto Rico in his tournament opener. Jackson fell short in their contest, dropping a 3-0 to Ortiz. 

Torres fell by a 3-0 margin to Cuba’s Ramon Luis in his first bout of the tournament. 

Light welterweight Jose Alday (Odessa, Texas) and heavyweight Michael Hilton (Trenton, N.J.) will both take the ring for the first bouts of the tournament for both boxers. Alday faces Uruguay’s Eduardo Abreu while Hilton will battle Samir Elmais of Canada in Saturday’s quarterfinal action. 

The event is the first international ranking tournament for the elite men as they begin their run toward the 2013 AIBA World Championships and beyond. Coaches Bienvenido “Benny” Roman (Brooklyn, N.Y.), Kenneth Sims, Sr. (Chicago, Ill.), Kevin Benford (Cincinnati, Ohio), and Edward "Mike" Murphy (Port Jeff Station, N.Y.) are leading the squad in Chile with Dr. Lucien Parrillo (Wallingford, Conn.) serving as the Team Physician.
