Gary Salazar Kicks Off Youth World Championships Action in Impressive Fashion
(COLORADO SPRINGS, COLO.) – Bantamweight Gary Salazar (Fresno, Calif.) was the first U.S. boxer to step through the ropes at the Youth World Championships in Yerevan, Armenia and he enjoyed an impressive start with a stoppage victory. Light flyweight Noberto Torres (Inverness, Fla.) and light welterweight Julian Rodriguez (Paterson, N.J.) didn’t enjoy the same success in their evening bouts. Both dropped close contests in their first round match-ups to eliminate them from the competition.
Salazar faced Tajikistan’s Shavkatbek Negmatov in bantamweight preliminary round action in the first session of the tournament. The California native got off to a quick start in the contest, taking an 8-3 lead after the first round. He extended his lead to a 15-5 advantage after the second round of boxing. Yet Negmatov didn’t make it to the final bell, Salazar stopped him at the 1:21 mark in the third round to take a first round win. Salazar moves on to second round competition where he will face Syria’s Ali Ghouson on Saturday afternoon.
Torres trailed England’s Jack Bateson by one-point after the first round but Bateson pushed his advantage to 5-2 after the second. The English boxer doubled his point total in the third round to win a 10-5 victory over Torres.
Rodriguez’s bout with Canada’s Movladdin Biyarslanov was close throughout the nine minutes of action but the 2012 USA Boxing National Championships silver medalist trailed by a slim margin throughout the contest. The Canadian boxer took a 4-3 lead after the first round and Rodriguez faced a two-point deficit as the final round began. He couldn’t dent Biyarslanov’s lead in the final round and dropped a 12-10 final decision.
The remaining three U.S. boxers will take the ring in Friday’s action with lightweight Maliek Montgomery (Macon, Ga.) facing Sahan Aybay of Germany in the afternoon session. Flyweight Edmundo Guzman takes on Aldonis Suguro of Indonesia and light heavyweight Anthony Sims, Jr. (Ypsilanti, Mich.) will face Lithuania’s Edgar Liman in evening action.
The U.S. team is being led by Christopher Barela (Las Cruces, N.M.), Michael Montgomery (Macon, Ga.), and Gilberto Salazar (Fresno, Calif.).
The Youth World Championships, which take place every two years, began in 1979 with Yokohama, Japan hosting the inaugural event. The 2010 edition was the largest in the event’s history and full participant numbers for the 2012 event will be announced following the event draw.
Preliminary round action will run from November 29-December 2 with quarterfinal competition on December 3 and 4. Following the rest day, semifinal action will be contested on December 6 and the event will conclude with championship bouts on December 7.
