The Lightweights and Light Welterweights Take the Stage at the 2012 USA Boxing National Championships

Feb. 27, 2012, 10:54 p.m. (ET)

(COLORADO SPRINGS, COLO) – The competitors in the two deepest weight divisions were the only boxers to take the ring on Monday at the 2012 USA Boxing National Championships at the Fort Carson Special Events Center. As both weight divisions started the tournament with over 64 competitors, the two weight classes had one more day of competition than their counterparts.

The 11 a.m. session featured only light welterweights and opened with a strong upset in early action. Wesley Ferrer (Brooklyn, N.Y.) claimed a 26-20 victory over defending champion Semajay Thomas (Chicago, Ill.) in his second bout of the 2012 USA Boxing National Championships to move on to third round action. Ferrer will challenge Jose Alday (Odessa, Texas) on Wednesday.

2011 National Golden Gloves champion Michael Reed (Waldorf, Md.) earned a victory in the marquee bout of the early session, a light welterweight showdown with Olympic Trials participant George Rincon (Carrollton, Texas). Reed won a 19-16 decision to move on to a third round contest with Kevin Watts (Lancaster, Calif.).

A full session of lightweight action took place on Monday night with all 64 remaining 132-pound competitors taking the ring. 2008 Olympian Raynell Williams (Cleveland, Ohio) opened the action with a 22-7 win over Elias Diaz (Chula Vista, Calif.) in his first bout of the tournament. Two-time national champion and Olympic Trials titlist Jose Ramirez (Avenal, Calif.) opened USA Boxing National Championships action as well, and he did so in impressive fashion. After a close first round, Ramirez turned up the heat in his bout with Karin Zaiden (Roanoke, Va.) in the second round. He gave Zaiden standing eight counts at the end of the second round and start of the third before the referee jumped in and stopped the contest. Ramirez will take on 2011 National PAL Champion Albert Bell (Toledo, Ohio) tomorrow.

Nine of the 10 men’s weight divisions will compete in Tuesday’s action with the flyweight class being the only weight class to enjoy another off day. The female competitors will open competition on Wednesday.

Results will be disseminated nightly upon the completion of competition and running results can be found at www.usaboxing.org
