Upcoming Competitive Opportunities

Sept. 04, 2008, 11:28 a.m. (ET)
For female boxers in the United States, there are currently three national tournaments that award ranking points, and provide the most competitive domestic opportunities to build competitive skill and proficiency in the ring.  For boxers wishing to become the best, regular competition against other top boxers is an important part of their development. Through tournament competition, boxers have the opportunity to assess their fitness and skill, learn the judging system, practice staying on weight, develop the ability to follow tactical and strategic advice, and have fun.

In the next 12 months, the following tournaments are being organized for U.S. boxers:

2008 National PAL (September 28-October 4)
The PAL National Championships is known as one of the most competitive tournaments in the nation.
National PAL fully supports female boxers with the same awards as their male participants.  National PAL's model of equal treatment of boxers is unparalleled. Girl and women boxers are encouraged to participate.  Show your support for those who support female boxers by participating in the National PAL tournament.

The 2008 National PAL Championships will again be held in Oxnard, California.  National PAL Championships feature boxing events for age divisions.  Check the National PAL Championships website for more information at  www.oxnardpalboxing.com

2009 US Championships (t.b.a. by USA Boxing)
The 2009 Championships have not yet been announced, and may be held as early as March.  USA Boxing will soon announce the dates, place, and whether the women's and men's tournaments will held together, or separate from each other.  For details on this event, including eligibility requirements, check the USA Boxing calendar, at www.usaboxing.org/event

In the past, the US Championships (known last year as "Future Stars") has been the sole event that determines women's membership on Team USA.  Placement in first or second place in this tournament has meant a possible invitation to represent the US in international competition.  When women's boxing is included in the Olympic Games, it is likely that USA Boxing will change the Team USA selection process to be similar to its men's team selection process.

2009 Golden Gloves (June or July)
The National Golden Gloves organization separates its men's and women's national championships.  The National Golden Gloves Championships is scheduled to be held in Hollywood, Florida.  For more information on the 2009 tournament, including eligibility requirements, go to their Championships website at www.womensnationalgoldengloves.com
