(COLORADO SPRINGS, COLO.) – The event draw was conducted on Saturday morning at the 2008 AIBA Youth World Championships in Guadalajara, determining the pairings for all of the competitors.
Four U.S. boxers will take the ring on the opening day of action with three U.S. boxers competing in the afternoon session and one boxing in the evening. Flyweight Adam Lopez (San Antonio, Texas) will kick of the action for the U.S. team, facing off with Germany’s Geier Dieter. Featherweight Kevin Rivers (Fort Washington, Md.) and light heavyweight Robert Brant (Oakdale, Minn.) will be the final two boxers to compete in the first session, taking on Ireland’s Tyrone McKenna and Germany’s Artur Schmidt respectively. Light welterweight Roscoe Hill IV (Spring, Texas) will be the only U.S. boxer to compete in the evening session, battling Croatia’s Sandro Mrdenovic.
Four members of Team USA will compete in Sunday’s preliminary round competition with light flyweight Oscar Cantu (Kingsville, Texas) taking on Mexico’s Saul Tuarez and welterweight Errol Spence (Desoto, Texas) facing off with Colombia’s Alex Theran. In evening competition, lightweight Traon Bynum (Fort Washington, Md.) will battle Cuba’s Juan Garcia while middleweight Luis Arias (Milwaukee, Wis.) will challenge Hungary’s Tamas Gumdi.
Three U.S. boxers will close preliminary round competition on Monday with bantamweight Josh Berrelleza (Riverside, Calif.) facing Ecuador’s Jonathan Valarezo in afternoon competition. The two heavyweights will be the final two boxers to compete as heavyweight Nicholas Kisner (Glen Burnie, Md.) takes on the Czech Republic’s Martin Krelina and super heavyweight Joey Dawejko battles the Virgin Island’s Clayton Laurent.
Preliminary round action will begin on Saturday at 2 p.m. CST at the Gymnasium Lopez Mateos Arena in Guadalajara.
