First Day of Boxing Wraps Up at Under 19s(KANSAS CITY, MO)-The first day of boxing at the Under 19 National Championships came to a close today, with six bouts being contested at the KCI Expo Center in Kansas City, Mo. Six boxers are that much closer to being named champion and earning the chance to compete Under 19 Worlds in Guadalajara, Mexico.
Joel Flores (Hart, Mich.) and Robert Easter (Toledo, Ohio) kicked off the event in the lightweight division. Easter got off to a quick start, registering five points to Flores' three. By the end of the second round, Easter led 9-5 and in the third round, he held Flores scoreless while earning two more points. Easter went on to win by a score of 19-7.
The light welterweight bout between Jonathan Escoto (Sunfish Lake, Minn.) and Morris Young (Saginaw, Mich.) was close down to the last bell. At the end of one, Young led 4-2, but in the second round, Escoto tied it up at five a piece. Escoto took a slight 6-5 edge at the end of three, but the two were tied at 8 when the final bell range. Even the tie-breaker was close, but Escoto managed an 18-17 win.
In the second light welterweight bout, it was a battle between the Texans with Jordan Jones (Garland, Texas) defeating Gregorio Gutierrez (Robstown, Texas), 8-3. It took two full rounds before the first point was scored, and at the end of three, Jones led 2-0. He let loose in the fourth, scoring six points and holding Gutierrez to only 3. Jones recorded an 8-3 win.
Welterweights Juan Heraldez (Las Vegas, Nev.) and Darnell Mason (St. Louis, Mo.) met in the fifth bout of the day. Heraldez, held Mason scoreless through two while recording six points. He kept punching while playing solid defense in the third and fourth rounds going on to defeat Mason 17-1.
The second welterweight bout began slowly with neither William Hight (Grand Rapids, Mich.) nor Manuel Contreras (St. Paul Park, Minn.) scoring a point in the first round. Contreras managed to record four points in both the second and third rounds, while Hight remained scoreless. Contreras went on the win by a score of 14-1.
In the final bout of the afternoon, Luis Arias, (Milwaukee, WI) faced James Land (Midland, Texas). Arias got off to a quick start scoring an amazing 16 points in the first round while Land remained scoreless. The bout was stopped 49 seconds into the second round with Arias recording the win.
