Two changes were made to the United States roster with pinweight Sylvia Villapando withdrawing from the trip and welterweight Vanessa Jackson (Columbus, Ohio) being added to the roster on September 30.
The annual event which showcases the top boxers from north, central and south America will provide a good, early tune-up for the United States team before the Women's World Championships, November 22-29 in Ningbo City, China.
The 12 boxers representing the United States in the Pan American Championships are: flyweight Marlen Esparza (Houston, Texas); flyweight Cheryl Houlihan (Santee, Calif.); light bantamweight Sacred Downing (Trenton, N.J.); bantamweight Cynthia Moreno (Phoenix, Ariz.); featherweight Jody Ann Weller (Pomona, N.Y.); lightweight Caroline Barry (Colorado Springs, Colo.); light welterweight Queen Underwood (Seattle, Wash.); welterweight Vanessa Jackson (Columbus, Ohio); light middleweight Franchon Crews (Capitol Heights, Md.); middleweight Meredith Della Giustina (Versailles, Ky.), light heavyweight Mioshia Wagoner (Lawrence, Kansas) and heavyweight Tiffanie Hearn (Louisville, Ky.).
The U.S. team will be led by Christy Halbert (Brentwood, Tenn.), Ray Kerwick (Spokane, Wash.) and Daniel Vassar (Spokane, Wash.). Randy Richard (Opelousas, La.) will travel to Trinidad with the team as the AIBA official and Dr. Marlon Twyman joins the squad as the Team Physician.
