BOXING: The Brackets are Set at the Americas Olympic Qualifier in Port of Spain, Trinidad
(PORT OF SPAIN, TRINIDAD)- Americas Olympic Qualifier preliminary round competition will begin Wednesday at the Jean Pierre Sports complex in Port of Spain, Trinidad. Heavyweight Deontay Wilder (Tuscaloosa, Ala.) is the lone U.S. boxer to take the ring on the opening day of boxing, facing Colombia's Harol Caicedo in afternoon action. The event draw was completed on Wednesday morning, determining the road that each boxer will have to complete to earn a berth at the 2008 Olympic Games in Beijing, China. Light welterweight Javier Molina(Commerce, Calif.) and light welterweight Christopher Downs (Fort Carson, Colo.) will both compete in Thursday's preliminary action, facing Brazil's Myke Carvalho and Ecuador's Julio Cesar Castillo Torres respectively. Both Molina and Downs will have to place in the top three to earn a spot in Beijing. There will be a box-off on Finals day to determine the third place finisher. Lightweight Sadam Ali (Brooklyn, N.Y.) and middleweight Shawn Estrada (E. Los Angeles, Calif.) will both compete for the first time in Saturday's afternoon competition. Ali will face the winner of Venezuela and Guyana while Estrada will battle the victor of Trinidad's bout with St. Lucia. Ali, Estrada and Hunter will all have to advance to the final round to earn an Olympic spot. Super heavyweight Michael Hunter (Las Vegas, Nev.) will be the final U.S. boxer to take the ring as he makes his event debut in Saturday's evening action. Hunter will take on Colombia's Oscar Rivas Torres in his opening bout. Hunter must earn a gold medal in Port of Spain to claim an Olympic berth. The six U.S. boxers competing in Port of Spain are all hoping to join the five U.S. boxers currently qualified for the Olympic Games (light flyweight Luis Yanez, flyweight Rau'shee Warren, bantamweight Gary Russell, Jr., featherweight Raynell Williams (Cleveland, Ohio) and welterweight Demetrius Andrade (Providence, R.I.).
