BOXING: Shawn Estrada Earns Second Win at Americas Qualifier in Guatemala, Stands One Win Away from Beijing

(COLORADO SPRINGS, COLO.)-Middleweight Shawn Estrada (E. Los Angeles, Calif.) earned his second victory at the America Qualifier in Guatemala City, Guatemala on Sunday, defeating Colombia's Alexander Brand, 13-2. The victory advances Estrada to the semifinal round where he will face Brazil's Yamaguchi Florentino on Tuesday. A semifinal win will earn Estrada a berth in the 2008 Olympic Games in Beijing, China. Estrada grabbed the lead early in the bout, taking a slim 3-1 edge after the opening two minutes of boxing. He picked up the pace in the second stanza, more than doubling his point total to move out to an 8-2 advantage at the halfway mark of the bout. Estrada kept his defense tight over the final four minutes, holding Brand scoreless through the last two rounds. He held an 11-2 lead as the fourth round began and moved out to the 13-2 final victory to advance to the semifinal round. Super heavyweight Michael Hunter (Las Vegas, Nev.) will face Canada's Didier Bence in quarterfinal action late on Sunday night. He will need two victories to claim an Olympic berth. Over 130 boxers from 27 countries are scheduled to compete in the second Americas Qualifier with Nicaragua leading the way in athletes competing at 10 boxers. Competition will run from April 25-30 with 23 Olympic spots up for grabs in 10 weight classes in Guatemala. The trio of U.S. boxers are hoping to join their eight qualified teammates: light flyweight Luis Yanez (Duncanville, Texas), flyweight Rau'shee Warren (Cincinnati, Ohio), bantamweight Gary Russell, Jr. (Capitol Heights, Md.) , featherweight Raynell Williams (Cleveland, Ohio), lightweight Sadam Ali (Brooklyn, N.Y.), light welterweight Javier Molina (Commerce, Calif.), welterweight Demetrius Andrade (Providence, R.I.), and heavyweight Deontay Wilder (Tuscaloosa, Ala.)
