Daly 16th in Igls

IGLS, Austria (Jan. 19, 2013)-The U.S. men’s skeleton team battled the Igls track in the eighth World Cup of the series this morning, finishing 16-17-19. John Daly (Smithtown, N.Y.) was the top American in 16th.
“It’s frustrating to see these guys struggle to put a good run together,” said U.S. skeleton head coach Tuffy Latour. “We had some good finishes in St. Moritz last year, so we’re hoping for better finishes at World Championships.”
St. Moritz, Switzerland will host the 2013 World Championships from Jan. 25-Feb. 3, with the men’s skeleton races on Feb. 1-2. The U.S. men posted medal and career-best performances in St. Moritz last season, giving the team hope leading into the biggest race of the season.
Daly muscled his way down the course for a first run of 54.11 seconds. The 2010 Olympian gained one position in the final heat with a better run of 53.96 seconds. Daly finished 16th with a total time of 1:48.07 to lead the U.S. men.
Latvian Martins Dukurs had a commanding performance by smashing his own track record and finishing a whopping 0.75 seconds ahead of the field. Dukurs clocked a combined time of 1:45.13 to keep himself in the running for the “Triple Trophy.” Alexander Tretiakov was a distant second with a two-run total of 1:45.88, while Tomass Dukurs trailed his brother by 1.35 seconds for third.
Matt Antoine (Prairie du Chien, Wisc.) clocked two identical runs of 54.04 seconds for a combined time of 1:48.08. Despite his consistency, most athletes posted faster second runs, bumping Antoine three spots into 17th.
Kyle Tress (Ewing, N.J.) improved on his last two World Cup results after finishing 19th with a total time of 1:48.18.
The Igls World Cup continues today with the two-man bobsled World Cup event, where Steven Holcomb will debut the next generation BMW sled at 12 p.m. local time. The team event will immediately follow at 3:30 p.m.
