The U.S. bobsled team elected to train on the 2013 World Championship track in St. Moritz, Switzerland last weekend and has rejoined the World Cup circuit in Koenigssee. All three American pilots have medaled this season and hope to extend their success on Friday. USA-1 pilot Elana Meyers (Douglasville, Ga.) will race with national push champion Aja Evans (Chicago, Ill.). Jamie Greubel (Newtown, Pa.) and Emily Azevedo (Chico, Calif.) are hungry for the medals after earning their first career World Cup podium finish together in the final event in La Plagne, France before the holiday break. Jazmine Fenlator (Wayne, N.J.) and Lolo Jones (Des Moines, Iowa) launched the season with a medal performance on home ice in Lake Placid, N.Y. and are now eager to medal on foreign soil.
Women’s skeleton competitors Katie Uhlaender (Breckenridge, Colo.) and Noelle Pikus-Pace (Orem, Utah) will be next to take to the ice on Friday. Uhlaender and Pikus-Pace rang in the New Year with medal performances in Altenberg, Germany last weekend and have a history of success on the Koenigssee course. Uhlaender was victorious in the 2008 World Cup race, while Pikus-Pace claimed bronze in 2007.
John Daly (Smithtown, N.Y.), Kyle Tress (Ewing, N.J.) and Matt Antoine (Prairie du Chien, Wisc.) will compete in the men’s skeleton race on Saturday. Antoine was close to medaling in Koenigssee last season after finishing fourth, and all of the men’s entrants are expected to be competitive on the technical course.
Men’s bobsled pilots Steven Holcomb (Park City, Utah), Cory Butner (Yucaipa, Calif.) and Nick Cunningham (Monterey, Calif.) have had an extended break while training in St. Moritz and are eager to start the second half of the competitive season on the medal stand. Pilot and push athlete combinations for the two-man and four-man events will be decided following training on Wednesday.
